Hearing God Together

by Johnson Bowie
We have a God who loves to speak to His people both individually and corporately. He delights in gathering His people together to hear, discuss and live out His Word as one body. To journey into the great future God has for us, we have to be people who recognize and follow the voice of our shepherd. Coming together to hear His Word has incredible power, as we can do much more than we ever could alone. Let’s lock arms and move forward on the mission our God has set before us!

Exodus 24:3 NIV

When Moses went and told the people all the Lord’s words and laws, they responded with one voice, “Everything the Lord has said we will do.”

Hearing God begins with believing He speaks.

John 10:4-5, 27 NIV

“… his sheep follow him because they know HIS VOICE. But they will never follow a STRANGER; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice… My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.”

Greek for “WORD”

Logos – Written Word of God
Rhema – Spoken Word of God

Romans 10:17 NKJV

So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word [Rhema] of God.

Isaiah 55:10-11 NLT

“The rain and snow come down from the heavens and stay on the ground to water the earth. They cause the grain to grow, producing seed for the farmer and bread for the hungry. It is the same with my word. I send it out, and it always produces fruit. It will accomplish all I want it to, and it will prosper everywhere I send it.

Romans 1:16 NIV

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power [dunamis] of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes.

Ephesians 4:11–16 TPT

And he has appointed some with grace to be apostles, and some with grace to be prophets, and some with grace to be evangelists, and some with grace to be pastors, and some with grace to be teachers. And their calling is to nurture and prepare all the holy believers to do their own works of ministry [EQUIPPED], and as they do this they will enlarge and build up the body of Christ. These grace ministries will function until we all attain oneness into the faith [UNITED], until we all experience the fullness of what it means to know the Son of God [REVELATION], and finally we become one into a perfect man with the full dimensions of spiritual maturity and fully developed into the abundance of Christ [MATURE]. And then our immaturity will end! And we will not be easily shaken by trouble, nor led astray by novel teachings or by the false doctrines of deceivers who teach clever lies [ANCHORED]. But instead we will remain strong and always sincere in our love as we express the truth [LOVING]. All our direction and ministries will flow from Christ and lead us deeper into him, the anointed Head of his body, the church [AUTHENTIC]. For his “body” has been formed in his image and is closely joined together and constantly connected as one. And every member has been given divine gifts to contribute to the growth of all; and as these gifts operate effectively throughout the whole body, we are built up and made perfect in love [USING OUR GIFTS].

Mark 4:23-24 NKJV

“If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.” Then He said to them, “Take heed what you hear.”

Blepō – Greek – pay close attention to
Shama’ – Hebrew – hear in order to obey

Mark 4:24-25 TPT

Be diligent to understand the meaning behind everything you hear, for as you do, more understanding will be given to you. And according to the depth of your longing to understand, much more will be added to you. For those who listen with open hearts will receive more revelation. But those who don’t listen with open hearts will lose what little they think they have!”

1 Samuel 3:10 NKJV
Samuel answered, “Speak, for Your servant hears [shama’].”

Matthew 7:3-5 TPT

“Why would you focus on the flaw in someone else’s life and yet fail to notice the glaring flaws of your own? How could you say to your friend, ‘Let me show you where you’re wrong,’ when you’re guilty of even more? You’re being hypercritical and a hypocrite! First acknowledge and deal with your own ‘blind spots,’ and then you’ll be capable of dealing with the ‘blind spot’ of your friend.”

James 1:22-25 NLT

But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.

Hebrews 10:25 TPT

This is not the time to pull away and neglect meeting together, as some have formed the habit of doing. In fact, we should come together even more frequently, eager to encourage and urge each other onward as we anticipate that day dawning.
