We have a God who loves to speak to us, and we were made to hear Him. Communication with God is key, because much of what He says effects what comes next in our lives. So, it’s important that we understand the ways in which He speaks. One of those ways is through prayer. Let’s take time to learn the principles of how to hear His voice in prayer so we can fulfill the purpose He has for us!

Hearing God: Hearing God Through Prayer

Transcendence means that God exists apart from, and is not subject to, the limitations of the material universe. He is above and beyond, surpassing and excelling, greatly superior to us.

Immanence means that it is possible to experience His immediate friendship.

Principles of Hearing God Through Prayer:

1. Make God my highest priority and pursuit.

Matthew 6:33 NKJV

“But seek FIRST the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”

2 Types of Followers of God:

1. Those who view God as an addition to their lives

2. Those who view God as their PRIMARY PURSUIT IN LIFE

“My devotional life is a direct reflection of where I place God in my life.”

Principles of Hearing God Through Prayer:

2. Learn to listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit.

Psalm 46:10 NIV

“Be still, and know that I am God…”

John 16:12-13 NLT

“There is so much more I want to tell you, but you can’t bear it now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future.”

Romans 8:14 NLT

For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.

1 Corinthians 2:10-12 NLT

But it was to us that God revealed these things by his Spirit. For his Spirit searches out everything and shows us God’s deep secrets. No one can know a person’s thoughts except that person’s own spirit, and no one can know God’s thoughts except God’s own Spirit. And we have received God’s Spirit (not the world’s spirit), so we can know the wonderful things God has freely given us.

Primary Ways God Speaks to You in Prayer:

INWARD WITNESS and INWARD VOICE

Inward Witness: spiritual intuition, more of a sense that God is bearing witness with your spirit about a particular direction or decision

Inward Voice: where the witness moves into an inward voice, usually in guiding you with a major decision

Principles of Hearing God Through Prayer:

3. Balance the voice with the written Word of God.

God never says anything that doesn’t agree with what He’s already said.

John 15:7 NKJV

“If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.”

Principles of Hearing God Through Prayer:

4. Act on what you hear.

James 1:22-25 NLT

But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.
